Common mistakes
- 1Loading the Trustpilot widget script before obtaining consent, even though it makes third-party requests
- 2Not disclosing the Trustpilot widget in the cookie and privacy policy as a third-party resource
- 3Embedding the widget on every page rather than only on review-relevant pages, increasing unnecessary data transfer
Compliance considerations
The Trustpilot widget loads third-party JavaScript that creates iframes to display review content. While primarily a display widget, it transmits the visitor's IP address to Trustpilot servers.
Consent: The widget does not perform behavioural tracking, but it does create third-party network requests. Under ePrivacy, consent may be required before loading the widget script unless the reviews are considered strictly necessary for the requested service.
Data capture: IP address is transmitted with each widget load. No cookies are set by default, though Trustpilot may use session storage for widget state.
Privacy notice: Must disclose the use of Trustpilot as a third-party widget provider and the data transmitted during widget loading.
