Overview
Advertising pixel that tracks page visits, sign-ups, and purchases, sending conversion data to Reddit's US-based ad platform for retargeting and campaign optimisation. Less widely deployed than major platform pixels, which means it is frequently overlooked during tag governance audits. Increasingly found on technology, gaming, and financial services websites, and its lower profile should not be mistaken for lower risk.

Common mistakes
- 1Overlooking the Reddit Pixel during governance audits because of its lower deployment frequency compared to Google, Meta, or LinkedIn tags
- 2Firing the pixel before consent is obtained, treating it as low-risk because Reddit is perceived as a community platform rather than an advertising network
- 3Not implementing the Conversions API as a server-side complement, relying solely on client-side tracking that is increasingly blocked by browsers and ad blockers
- 4Failing to include Reddit in the advertising consent category within the CMP, allowing it to fire as an uncategorised or miscategorised tag
- 5Not reviewing the data Reddit collects through the pixel, including IP addresses and user agent strings, which constitute personal data under GDPR
Compliance considerations
The Reddit Pixel sets first-party cookies (_rdt_uuid) and transmits browsing and conversion data to Reddit servers in the United States. Under GDPR, this requires explicit advertising consent before the tag fires. Reddit is self-certified under the EU-US Data Privacy Framework, providing a legal transfer mechanism, but organisations should verify the current certification status. The Reddit Pixel should be categorised under advertising consent in the CMP and blocked until explicit consent is granted. Organisations should also assess whether the Conversions API integration introduces additional data processing that requires disclosure in the privacy notice.
